Driver Facts
- Ontario Road and Safety Annual Report – reported that 831 people were killed in collisions and 36,711 were injured in 2003
- Every 10 hours in Ontario someone is killed in an traffic accident
- Every 14minutes in Ontario there is someone injured in a traffic accident
- 71% increase in licensed drivers since 1980
- Most accidents happen in June, July and August – People are not as careful in clear, dry conditions.
- 85% of all collisions are caused by human error
- Things that impact driving; other drivers, stress at home or work, where you are going, rushing, mental and emotional state, fatigue etc.
- Fatigue is involved in 70% of collisions
- In the city traveling 60km you should be looking 1 block ahead
- In the country traveling 80 – 100 km you should be looking 1 km ahead
- 6 types of accidents:
- Two vehicles – 61%
- Miscellaneous (bikes/trains) – 3%
- Single vehicle – 28%
- Pedestrian – 8%
- Following distance behind a car should be 1 second/ 3km
- Following distance behind van/truck should be 2 second/6km
